Time Duration Calculator

Calculate elapsed time between two times — in hours and minutes, total minutes, and decimal hours. Add a break or span multiple days.

How do you calculate hours and minutes between two times?

To calculate the hours between two times, subtract the start time from the end time. If the end time is on the next day, add 24 hours before subtracting. To convert to decimal hours, divide the total minutes by 60. The calculator below handles overnight shifts and break deductions automatically.

How to calculate hours between two times

  1. Enter the start time in 24-hour format (e.g. 09:00).
  2. Enter the end time (e.g. 17:30).
  3. If the end is on the next day, turn on End time is next day or fill in both dates.
  4. Optional: add a break in hours and minutes to subtract from the total.
  5. Read the duration in hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes.

Example

From 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8h 0m (8.00 hours).

Frequently asked questions

What time format does it accept?
24-hour HH:MM (e.g. 09:30, 17:45). Most browsers' time inputs handle local formatting automatically.
What if my shift crosses midnight?
Turn on “End time is next day”, or set explicit start and end dates.
How do breaks work?
Enter the break length in hours and minutes. It's subtracted from the total. Breaks longer than the total duration aren't allowed.
Can I use this for timesheets?
Yes — the decimal-hours output is convenient for invoicing or payroll calculations.
Does it handle daylight saving time?
When you provide explicit start and end dates the calculation runs in UTC, so it returns the exact wall-clock difference you entered without DST adjustments.
