Why time uses base 60

An hour has 60 minutes, not 100, so clock time and decimal numbers do not line up. Converting is a single division, but skipping it produces small errors that add up across a pay period.

Why 7:30 is 7.5 hours, not 7.30 hours

30 minutes is half an hour, so 7:30 is 7.5. If you type 7.30 into a payroll sheet you have claimed 7 hours 18 minutes, twelve minutes short. The same trap catches 7:15 (7.25, not 7.15) and 7:45 (7.75, not 7.45).

Is 7 hours 30 minutes equal to 7.30 hours?

No. It is 7.5 hours. Minutes are sixtieths of an hour, so 30 minutes is half an hour. Writing 7.30 in a timesheet usually means 7 hours 18 minutes, which is a common payroll error.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes divided by 60 is 0.75, so 3 hr 45 min is 3.75 hours.

Why do payroll systems use decimal hours?

Pay is hours multiplied by a rate. Decimal hours multiply cleanly, while hours and minutes need converting first. Spreadsheets and payroll software almost always expect the decimal form.

What if the decimal does not divide evenly?

Some values, such as 1.3333 hours, land between whole seconds. The calculator shows hours, minutes and seconds, and keeps full precision internally, rounding only for display.
