How Many Weeks Are Between Two Dates?

4 min read

Count full weeks and leftover days between two dates, with a worked example, an inclusive-date check, and a quick calculator.

To find the weeks between two dates, count the days between them and divide by seven. The part people often miss is whether the first and last dates both count.

A worked example

Take January 1 to February 12, 2026. The gap between those dates is 42 days. Divide 42 by 7 and you get exactly six weeks. That is the answer when the start date is not counted as an additional day.

If you are counting every date on a schedule, including both January 1 and February 12, the span contains 43 calendar days. That is six weeks and one day. Both answers can be correct. The important thing is to use the rule that matches your deadline.

Whole weeks, leftover days and decimal weeks

  • Whole weeks: Divide the day count by seven and use the whole number.
  • Leftover days: Use the remainder after counting complete weeks.
  • Decimal weeks: Keep the fraction, such as 31 ÷ 7 = 4.43 weeks when rounded to two decimals.

For example, a 31-day gap is four full weeks and three days. A decimal result of 4.43 weeks expresses the same period in a different format.

Calendar weeks are not working weeks

Seven calendar days make one week even if that week contains a public holiday. If you need to exclude weekends and holidays for a business deadline, use our Business Days Calculator instead. A business-day count depends on the working week and holiday dates you use.

Calculate your own date range

Open the Weeks Between Dates Calculator, enter your start and end dates, and choose whether to include the end date. You will see whole weeks, leftover days, decimal weeks and the total days together.

If your task involves a contract, statutory notice period or regulated deadline, check whether its rules count the start day, end day, business days or calendar days. Do not rely on a general example as the governing rule.
